Metro Academy Site Tour

For Rail Safety Week, Young Transport Professionals collaborated with Metro Trains Melbourne to present on the Driver Training Curriculum with Metro Academy. This event was inspired by the Rail Safety Week agenda of promoting and raising awareness about how to stay safe around rail, as well
remind the community to act responsibility when near, or on, the rail network.

The event was facilitated by Charles Robinson, Sarah Howard, and Frank Mihalcsek. The event program consisted of a presentation on the Driver Training Curriculum as well as a site tour of Metro Academy. The overview of the Driver Training Curriculum was an opportunity for the attendees to get insight into the role of a train driver and how they ensure passengers get to their destination safety while managing disruptions such as rolling stock faults, passenger disruptions and network disruptions, sometimes all in parallel.

The site tour consisted of a presentation on the Track Simulator, Passenger Screen Doors, and a demonstration on the X’Trapolis 100 full size simulator, where some attendees got the opportunity to operate the simulator and stop at a station. This allowed the attendees to understand how these tools are used by the trainee drivers to get familiar with the network and operating rolling stock before they reach the on-the-job training phase of their curriculum. The presentation on the Passenger Screen Doors was a unique opportunity to get a seek peak into the technology that will be used inside the Metro Tunnel and how MTM operations and passenger experience will change with this technology.

The evening concluded with professional networking, where the attendees continued the discussion and connected with likeminded young professionals outside their organisation.

Young Transport Professionals would like to say thank you to the facilitators for their time and knowledge sharing on the topic of Driver Training Curriculum from Metro Academy. Young Transport Professionals would like to say thank you to Paul O’halloran for supporting YTP as an industry partner, without they support we could not organise this event to highlight the importance of National Road Safety Week.
